MJ Nationals 2011-12 - Final Day

Phillip Copeland, Wednesday, 4 January 2012

CHAMPIONSHIP RACES SIX and SEVEN, DAY FOUR.

The competitors returned to Manly16SSC after two days off; one enforced lay day on new year’s eve and the planned lay day on new year’s day. Yet again we had perfect conditions with blue skies and a building NE breeze forecast to go above 15 knots. At the short briefing, Col Chidgey announced it was back to the sound for the fleet.

Out in the sound the swell was gentler than on the MJ fleet’s previous visit and at the start of race 6 there was a gaggle of championship seeking boats at the pin end all seeking an early advantage but at the gun it was 2767, Quantum Leap that got the jump on the rest of the boats to lead in the early stages. By the time the boats had reached the top mark for the first time, main fleet leader 2772, MWD (Daniel Heyworth and Jesse Dransfield) had assumed the lead and from that position they were never headed. In a dominant performance they were over 200m ahead of the rest by the time they reached the top mark for the second time and their lead was bolstered further by the chaos behind them as several of their pursuers arrived simultaneously at the top mark behind them on port and starboard tacks. Heyworth and Dransfield powered their way to victory to provisionally assume the MJ National title; the margin was over two and a half minutes. In a tight finish for the places, 2766, Tinny (Jackson and Flynn Twomey) edged out 2721, Bad Fish (Harley and Logan Walters) for second place.

The novice fleet was scattered across the sound as the NE wind strengthened but it was 2683, Black Pearl sailed by Lauren and Aimee Galloway who beat 2712, Totally Airbourne (James Croker and Tom Mount- Stephens) by 17 seconds with Bahari, Sophie and Nikolas Pender in 3rd place. By the way a special mention to the three Manly Yacht club boats who all performed admirably in their first MJ regatta with 2706, Children Overboard crewed by Jacob Taranto and Ryan Poole performing particularly well.

So, although Race 7 was theroretically a formality for MWD there was hot competition for main fleet placings. But just to emphasize their dominance over the last three races champions elect MWD led from pin to finish to make it four wins in a row. In a tight race they led 2769 Another Dark and Stormy (Chris Holmes and Angus Metcalfe) across the line by 34 seconds with a further short gap to 2766 Tinny (Jackson and Flynn Twomey) as they fought a tight battle for the championship runner-up position; 2769’s second place was crucial as it gave them second place overall on a count back.

In the final novice race of the series 2758, Bahari (Sophie and Nikolas Pender) secured their second win of the regatta from 2683, Black Pearl (Lauren and Aimee Galloway) and in 3rd place, 2719, Shabam sailed by Barnaby Dowse and Jasper Kernot secured the MJ Novice Championship following a series of consistent results in the handicap events.

Congratulations to all winners, competitors and organizers for a great regatta in perfect conditions; the stars of the week were all sailors in every class. See you all for the final round of the state championships at Point Wolstencroft in February and remember, we have the annual rookie fleet event so tell your friends about the opportunity for their children to participate in their first regatta and who knows, they may be sailing in next year’s MJ national championship.

NSW Manly Junior Sailing Association - Rural Youth Participation Program - Update

Phillip Copeland, Monday, 21 November 2011

The Association’s funding grant is slowly achieving its goals and objectives. Most recently, the final two self-drainers were delivered to the Windamere/Wallerawang groups. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my family for their support and commitment to the MJ’s and the funding grant.   This was another “in-kind’ contribution and I thank my children for their ‘endurance’.

Manly Junior Easter training at Lake Windamere

Phillip Copeland, Thursday, 26 May 2011

Bill Horder is a very inspiring man. At the age of 73 he has put much time and energy into rebuilding five Manly Juniors so his grandchildren and their friends can learn to sail.

After hearing about Bill last year, the Manly Junior Association of NSW applied to Communities NSW for one of their “Participation in Sport” grants. We are thrilled to have been successful and are using the money to support Manly Junior sailing in rural areas. Support is in the form of providing boats, equipment, training and the means to join our Rookie Fleet in the 3rd Round of our State Titles at Point Wolstoncroft in February. We are also keen to promote the exchange of experiences between coastal and country kids.

Over Easter several Manly Junior families from Sydney joined the Windamere Sailing Group (WSG) for a fun filled family sailing experience. Thank you to Bill Horder and his sons Martin and Gerald and their families for making us feel so welcome. We camped by Lake Windamere, waking to a good country frost, something our coastal sailors rarely experience. There was always a welcome roaring fire to warm up by while sharing a morning coffee.

Kingsley Forbes Smith came as our Association coach. He was brilliant, encouraging the kids whilst slowly building their sailing skills. We had fifteen country kids, six experienced MJ sailors and eight boats. They learned basic skills. Sail setting, wind observation, holding a straight course, tacking and gybing. The kids were really inspired and by the Monday, after sailing everyday their skills were noticeably improved. There were many classes sailing and some also enjoyed the thrill of flying the trapeze on a Nacra. When the wind was light there was much fun to be had “biscuiting” and canoeing.

On the Friday and Saturday nights, the “Rabbit Hunt“ was hugely popular, bouncing around paddocks in the back of a ute by the Easter moon. What could be more fun than that ?

Perhaps the “Egg Hunt” the next day!   That was amazing and enjoyed by all.

On ANZAC Day a moving ceremony was held at dawn. This was a unique setting with the rising lake mist, a bagpiper and the Australian flag flying from a boat mast.

It was wonderful weekend and great to see Bill’s hard work and initiative being taken a step further. We're all looking forward to next years event and encourage Manly Junior family to enjoy a wonderful country sailing experience.

Strong Competition Drives Successful Manly Junior NSW State Championship Results

Cath Hodgson-Croker, Wednesday, 23 February 2011

20 February, 2011, Pt Wolstoncroft, Central Coast, NSW

The coveted NSW Manly Junior (MJ) State Championship was awarded to Jim and Tom Colley, Avalon Sailing Club, in Bullet following a competitive three weekend sailing series.

NSW State Champions - 2755 Bullet - Jim & Tom Colley (Avalon SC)

The regatta was a spirited success with 120 junior sailors from seven clubs across New South Wales participating this year.

“The Manly Junior Sailing class continues to be one of the most successful ways in which children and young teenagers can master and finesse their sailing skills on the water. We are thrilled with the continued growth of this class, and the caliber of the sailing”, said Philip Copeland, President, Manly Junior Sailing Association of Australia.

NSW Runners Up - Shaun Connor & Will Divola (Manly 16' SSC)

The Manly Junior class was started in 1959, and continues to grow with a number of sailing clubs including Avalon, Cronulla, Hornsby, Manly 16ft Skiff, Middle Harbour 16ft Skiff, and Port Hacking participating and supporting the class across NSW.

Series winner, Jim Colley explained; “It was a great series with different & challenging conditions each weekend. Tom & I worked hard on our teamwork, improving our starts and being consistent. I also always looked forward to catching up with friends from other clubs at each regatta”.

NSW 3rd Place - Dainel Nugent & Angus Metcalf (Manly 16' SSC)

All-female crew winner, Annie Wilmot, Manly 16ft Skiff Club, said; “Having a strong competitive environment helps us continue to grow our sailing skills. The younger crews will develop this class and lay the foundation for future team success. It was so much fun getting out on the water and delivering this result ”.

MJ 2010-11 Nationals Report (& Results)

Phillip Copeland, Sunday, 26 December 2010

The 2010-2011 Manly Junior National Titles where hosted by Cronulla Sailing Club and were contested at the picturesque Bate Bay courses in the mouth of Port Hacking south of Sydney. The viewing area which allows spectators to watch all of the racing was packed each day. An invitation race and 10 championship races were completed in a 5 day series, with fantastic sailing weather that tested sailors in all wind strengths.

Monday 27th December saw an 18 knot southerly. The waterway is sheltered from the south and the sailors enjoyed flat water with a strong but shifting breeze which challenged tactics but also offered some enjoyable kite rides for both the invitation and first heat of the titles. Jim and Tom Colley of Avalon set the tone for the titles by winning the first race by 2 minutes from Shaun Connor and Will Divola of Manly 16ft SSC.

MJ Nationals Pictures

Day 2 had softer easterly breezes that were shifting and challenging. Winners of heat 2 were Daniel Nugent and Angus Metcalfe from Manly 16ft SSC. The novice division was headed by James Doyle and Monty Malouf also of Manly 16ftSSC.  Heat 3 was sailed beautifully by Shaun Connor and Will Divola of Manly 16ft SSC who reclaimed their earlier lead to take the bullet.

Day 3 offered sailors a 15 - 22 kt north east breeze. The course was set at the eastern end of Port Hacking which is open to the sea, so the strong breeze with large chop over small waves provided spectacular  kite rides, with some of the leading boats achieving some stunning  speeds ! Very heartening was the performance of the novice class that handled the challenging conditions with considerable skill. Heat 4 was the race of the series with the lead changing six times. It was finally won by Jim and Tom Colley of Avalon by just 5 second from Shaun Connor and Will Divola of Manly 16ft SSC. Heat 5 had the same result with a margin of 26 seconds.

Day 4 had light southerly winds. The water was very flat but the breezes were shifting through 20 degrees and gradually fading. Racing was very tactical. The 3rd race of the day was started but abandoned shortly after as wind almost disappeared. Heats 6 and 7 were won by Jim and Tom Colley of Avalon.

Day 5 had fresh north-east winds with the course set further west into Port Hacking with reduced the chop. It was an absolutely perfect day for sailing and 3 heats were completed. Jim and Tom Colley were dominant in the final heats and with 2 drops over the series had a perfect score sheet. 2nd overall were Shaun Connor and Will Divola of Manly 16ft SSC followed by Daniel Nugent and Angus Metcalfe also from Manly 16ft SSC. Leading novice boat was Doyle and Monty Malouf from Manly 16ftSSC. Importantly the sailing was close during the whole regatta with constant lead changes really pushing the Colley boys. Ultimately Jim and Tom’s  skill and teamwork in a boat, which would be the envied by sailors of any age, was the reason for their dominating success..

Cronulla Sailing Club broke with tradition to sail an afternoon only regatta which proved successful. The back to back races on slightly shorter courses kept the racing very tight and allowed the novice fleet to stay in touch with the main fleet. The drinks and lollies station just behind the start boat was very popular and the camaraderie between sailors during the event was outstanding. Cronulla are to be congratulated for running a professional and successful event.
